A Muslima’s Guide to Spreading Positive Energy

In our journey as Muslims, there are fundamental teachings of Islam that guide us towards spreading positivity, fostering unity, and building strong bonds within our Ummah. Let’s explore these teachings and how they can empower us to create a more harmonious and compassionate community.

  1. Saying Salaam: One of the simplest yet most profound acts of kindness is saying “Salaam” (peace) to one another. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you about something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salaam amongst yourselves” (Sahih Muslim). By greeting each other with Salaam, we not only express goodwill but also strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood within the Ummah.
  2. Forgiveness: Forgiveness is a cornerstone of Islam that fosters healing and reconciliation. Allah says in the Quran, “And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful” (An-Nur 24:22). As Muslims, we are encouraged to forgive those who wrong us, as forgiveness is a means of attaining Allah’s mercy and blessings.
  3. Being Polite and Respectful: Islam teaches us to be polite and respectful in our interactions with others. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent” (Sahih Bukhari). This Hadith reminds us of the importance of using kind and respectful language, avoiding gossip and backbiting, and treating others with dignity and respect.
  4. Not Suspecting Each Other: Suspicion and mistrust can damage relationships and undermine unity within the Ummah. Allah says in the Quran, “O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful” (Al-Hujurat 49:12). This verse reminds us to avoid negative assumptions about our fellow Muslims and to refrain from spying or backbiting, which only serve to sow discord and division.
  5. Promoting Justice and Equity: Islam teaches us to stand up for justice and fairness in all aspects of our lives. Allah says in the Quran, “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do” (Al-Ma’idah 5:8). As Muslims, we have a responsibility to uphold justice and equity in our interactions with others, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or social status.
  6. Supporting and Empowering Each Other: Islam emphasises the importance of supporting and empowering one another, especially among sisters in the Ummah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like a single body; if one part of it feels pain, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever” (Sahih Bukhari). This Hadith illustrates the interconnectedness of believers and the obligation to support and uplift each other in times of need.
  7. Seeking Common Ground: In a diverse Ummah, it’s essential to seek common ground and celebrate our shared values and beliefs. Allah says in the Quran, “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favour of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favour, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it” (Ali ‘Imran 3:103). This verse highlights the importance of unity and solidarity among believers, regardless of differences in culture or background.
  8. Practicing Patience and Tolerance: Patience and tolerance are essential virtues that strengthen our relationships and promote unity within the Ummah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever restrains his anger when he is able to vent it, Allah will call him before all the creatures on the Day of Resurrection, and will let him choose of the Hur al-Ayn (fair maidens of Paradise) whatever he likes” (Abu Dawood). This Hadith emphasises the reward for exercising patience and self-control, even in challenging situations.

Dear sisters, by embodying these teachings in our daily lives, we can contribute to building a more united and cohesive Ummah. Let’s strive to spread positivity, forgiveness, kindness, and justice wherever we go, knowing that our actions have the power to make a difference in the world. With love and sisterhood, Sister Hafsa ❤
