Every believing woman is walking toward Allah, whether she feels strong or exhausted, steadfast or struggling.
Between school runs and sajdah, between silent dua and unseen battles, we are all returning to our Lord.
And we live between two profound truths:
We will only enter Jannah by His mercy.
And we are not allowed to become complacent.
To lean too heavily on one is to fall into arrogance.
To forget the other is to fall into despair.
Our faith lives in the balance.
This life is a journey, not a destination, and Allah did not leave us to wander it alone. He sent guidance, He sent revelation, He sent messengers. He showed us what leads to Him and what leads away from Him. He clarified truth from falsehood, belief from disbelief, obedience from rebellion.
There are only two ultimate ends: to return safely or to return in loss. The believer lives with that awareness, knowing our Lord is Most Merciful and Just. We know every choice echoes beyond the grave. We know that this dunya is temporary, but the Hereafter is permanent.
Understanding this balance protects the heart from the silent destroyers: arrogance and despair. Arrogance whispers, “You’ve done enough. You’re safe.” Despair whispers, “You will never be enough. Why try?” Both lead to ruin.
But the one who knows she is a traveler, dependent, guided, accountable, continues walking. Not because she trusts her deeds. Not because she feels secure. But because she trusts the mercy of the One he is returning to.
Surrounded by Mercy Before We Ever Acted
Allah introduces Himself to us constantly as Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem:
Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Before we performed a single prayer, before we fasted a single day, before we gave a single coin in charity, we were already drowning in mercy.
We did not create our sight.
We did not create our hearing.
We did not guide ourselves to Islam.
And He has granted you all that you asked Him for. If you tried to count Allah’s blessings, you would never be able to number them. Indeed humankind is truly unfair, ˹totally˺ ungrateful.
Ibrahim 14:34
Even the ability to worship is a blessing.
Even the guilt after sin is a blessing.
Even the test that pushes you back into sujood is a blessing.
Guidance itself is mercy. And without it, nothing else matters.
Arrogance
We do not enter Jannah by our deeds alone, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made this reality unmistakably clear.
He said:
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise.” (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet’s companions) said, ‘Not even you, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?’ He said, “Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me.” So be moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability: and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5673
If the best of creation, the most obedient, the most beloved to Allah, affirms that his entry into Jannah is by mercy, what then of us?
Our deeds are not a price we pay for Paradise. They are acts of servitude to the One who deserves worship.
Jannah is not earned like a wage. It is granted as a mercy.
The Man Who Worshipped for 500 Years
There is a powerful narration reported by scholars about a man from the past who devoted himself entirely to worship. He withdrew from society and lived alone on an island for 500 years. Five centuries.
No distractions.
No fame.
No audience.
Only prayer, fasting, and remembrance of Allah.
Allah caused a spring of fresh water to flow for him. A tree bore fruit so he could eat. Even his isolation was facilitated by divine mercy.
When he died and was resurrected, Allah said: “Enter My Paradise by My mercy.”
But the man replied: “Rather, by my deeds.”
So Allah commanded that his deeds be weighed against one blessing: his eyesight. Five hundred years of uninterrupted worship were placed on one side, and the blessing of sight was placed on the other. The blessing outweighed the worship, so he was ordered toward punishment.
And in that moment, when reality became clear, he cried out: “No! By Your mercy, my Lord! By Your mercy!” And Allah admitted him into Jannah by His mercy.
The lesson is not that worship is meaningless. The lesson is that we live surrounded by blessings whose weight we rarely comprehend. Five hundred years of devotion could not equal the blessing of sight alone.
Sight, something we use effortlessly.
Something we assume.
Something we did not create.
And that is only one blessing.
The heart that beats without our command.
The breath that returns every second.
The guidance that reached us.
The sins concealed.
The doors of repentance reopened again and again.
Every act of worship we perform is already wrapped inside mercy. We are not repaying Allah nor are we buying Jannah. We are pleading for it.
The Danger of Feeling Secure
Sometimes complacency enters quietly.
“I pray.”
“I fast Ramadan.”
“I’ve changed.”
“I wear the hijab.”
And slowly, a person begins to feel safe.
Allah warns:
Did they feel secure against Allah’s planning? None would feel secure from Allah’s planning except the losers.
Al-A’raf 7:99
The early generations understood this deeply.
Abdullah ibn Abi Mulaykah said:
وَمَا يُحْذَرُ مِنَ الإِصْرَارِ عَلَى النِّفَاقِ وَالْعِصْيَانِ مِنْ غَيْرِ تَوْبَةٍ لِقَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: {وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ}.And Ibrahim At-Taimi said, “When I compare my talks with my deeds (then I find that my deeds are deficient compared with my talks), I am afraid, my deeds deny what I talk.” And Ibn Abi Mulaika said, “I met thirty Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and each of them was afraid of becoming a hypocrite and none of them said that he was as strong in belief as the angel Jibril (Gabriel) or Mikael (Michael).” And Al- Hasan (Al-Basri) said, “It is only a faithful believer who dreads hypocrisy and only a hypocrite who considers himself safe (is not afraid of hypocrisy).”
And one should be afraid, not to persist in hypocrisy and disobedience of Allah (by committing sins) without repenting to Allah جل جلاله immediately, as is referred to in the Statement of Allah تعالى: “And (they) do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.” (V.3:135).
36 Chapter: (What is said regarding) the fear of a believer that his good deeds may be annulled (lost) without his knowledge
These were people who prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ. Who fought in battles, who gave their wealth and their lives. Yet they did not feel secure.
Security is dangerous because we are still in the journey. As long as we are breathing, our story is still being written.
Hearts turn. Circumstances change. Tests reveal what we did not know about ourselves.
We are not promised our final state. And in the sight of Allah, it is the ending that completes the account.
Despair
But Shaytan misguides in the opposite direction as well.
“You will never be good enough.”
“You’ve sinned too much.”
“What’s the point?”
Allah answers this directly:
Say, ˹O Prophet, that Allah says,˺ “O My servants who have exceeded the limits against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins. He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Az-Zumar 39:53
A believer does not rely on his deeds. But he also does not abandon them. Allah says:
those whose souls the angels take while they are virtuous, saying ˹to them˺, “Peace be upon you! Enter Paradise for what you used to do.”
An-Nahl 16:32
And He says:
They will each be assigned ranks according to their deeds. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.
Al-An‘am 6:132
So how do we understand this?
We do not enter Jannah as a transaction, as though our deeds obligate Allah. Rather, we enter by His mercy, and our deeds are the means He accepts and multiplies.
Because even our ability to perform those deeds is itself mercy, we were not created to calculate how much is “enough.” We were created to worship.
Allah says:
I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.
Adh-Dhariyat 51:56
Worship is our purpose. Jannah is the reward. And within Paradise, ranks differ.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and His Apostle, offer prayer perfectly and fasts the month of Ramadan, will rightfully be granted Paradise by Allah, no matter whether he fights in Allah’s Cause or remains in the land where he is born.” The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) ! Shall we acquaint the people with the is good news?” He said, “Paradise has one-hundred grades which Allah has reserved for the Mujahidin who fight in His Cause, and the distance between each of two grades is like the distance between the Heaven and the Earth. So, when you ask Allah (for something), ask for Al-firdaus which is the best and highest part of Paradise.” (i.e. The sub-narrator added, “I think the Prophet also said, ‘Above it (i.e. Al-Firdaus) is the Throne of Beneficent (i.e. Allah), and from it originate the rivers of Paradise.”)
And above all of it, Allah says in a hadith qudsi:
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When Allah created the Creation, He wrote in His Book–and He wrote (that) about Himself, and it is placed with Him on the Throne–‘Verily My Mercy overcomes My Anger.'”
Sahih al-Bukhari 7404
We strive not because we believe we can earn Paradise on our own. We strive because He is worthy of worship, and we hope, because His mercy is greater than our deeds.
Islam Is Easy But Not Casual
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights.” (See Fath-ul-Bari, Page 102, Vol 1).
But ease does not mean convenience. It does not mean picking what suits us and ignoring what challenges us.
It does not mean saying “Allah is Merciful” while persisting in sin without repentance.
Allah is Ar-Rahman, but He is also Al-‘Adl (The Just).
He is Al-Ghafoor, but He is also Shadeed al-‘Iqab (Severe in punishment).
His mercy is vast. But He is Al-‘Aziz (The Almighty), Al-Hakeem (The All-Wise), Al-Wasi’ (The All-Encompasing), Al-‘Aleem (The All-Knowing).
The Human Being: Honored and Tested
Indeed, We have dignified the children of Adam, carried them on land and sea, granted them good and lawful provisions, and privileged them far above many of Our creatures.
Al-Isra 17:70
The angels do not disobey.
The jinn and humans were given choice.
We fall. We struggle. We desire. We return. And when we return sincerely, Allah loves that return.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
(2451).Anas (RAA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often.” Related by At·Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah with a strong chain of narrators.
Bulugh al-Maram
Our weakness is not what destroys us. Arrogance does. Despair does. Refusing to turn back does.
The Balance We Must Live With
The believer walks to Allah on two wings: fear and hope.
Fear protects us from arrogance.
Hope protects us from despair.
We do not say, “I have done enough.”
And we do not say, “It is pointless.”
We say:
“My Lord, You deserve more than I can ever give. Accept from me what little I bring.”
And ˹remember˺ when Abraham raised the foundation of the House with Ishmael, ˹both praying,˺ “Our Lord! Accept ˹this˺ from us. You are indeed the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Al-Baqarah 2:127
Until our last breath, we strive, not because we think we have secured Jannah, but because we are servants of the Most Merciful.
And when we finally enter Paradise, it will not be because we deserved it. It will be because He is Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem.
May Allah admit us into Jannatul-Firdaus by His mercy, protect our hearts from arrogance and despair, and allow us to meet Him in a state of humility and hope. Ameen.
