Embracing Self-Improvement

Personal development is an integral part of a Muslima’s life, rooted in the desire to please Allah and live according to His teachings. This journey requires a commitment to self-reflection, learning, and growth. By focusing on spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being, we can navigate the challenges of life with confidence and grace. This article aims to provide valuable insights and practical tips to help us embark on the path of self-improvement.

Start within – Make the intention

To begin this journey, we must start within and make the intention. As Allah says in the Quran: “Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves” (Ar-Ra’d 13:11). This emphasizes the need for internal change as a base for external transformation that will benefit us and the ummah. It reminds us that we have the power to shape our own destinies, regardless of our circumstances, and highlights the importance of taking initiative and responsibility for our own growth and development.

For each one there are successive angels before and behind, protecting them by Allah’s command. Indeed, Allah would never change a people’s state ˹of favour˺ until they change their own state ˹of faith˺. And if it is Allah’s Will to torment a people, it can never be averted, nor can they find a protector other than Him.

Ar-Ra’d 13:11

Embrace Responsibility and Accountability

The notion that one’s upbringing determines their future is not unfamiliar. However, regardless of our past or upbringing, we are accountable for our actions and choices. We are taught that self-improvement and personal growth is not just a personal choice but a fundamental responsibility. This means we have the responsibility of not only development but also a duty to take charge of our growth by continually striving for improvement.

When faced with challenges or setbacks, it is important not to blame external factors for our circumstances. Instead, we should remember that we possess the strength and resilience to overcome any obstacle. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) highlighted the significance of always striving to excel in virtue and truth. As mentioned in the hadith:

Abdullah reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: “Truth leads one to virtue and virtue leads one to Paradise. A person continues to tell the truth until they are recorded as truthful. Conversely, lying leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell. A person continues to lie until they are recorded as a liar.”

Sahih Muslim 2607a

This hadith teaches us that maintaining honesty and integrity helps us build a strong moral character and leads us towards spiritual success. While it might be tempting to look for external excuses when things go wrong, embracing truth and virtue can guide us through adversity and pave the way for a more fulfilling and righteous life.

Focus on Strengths and Talents

Instead of dwelling on past experiences or perceived limitations, we should focus on utilizing our strengths and talents to create a brighter future for ourselves and those around us. Self-improvement starts with self-awareness – recognizing our strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth. It’s about understanding that we have the ability to learn, adapt, and become better versions of ourselves. This means acknowledging our shortcomings is essential for self-improvement.

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don’t say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your” if” opens the (gate) for the Satan.

Sahih Muslim 2664

This hadith beautifully emphasizes the importance of focusing on our strengths and talents for personal growth. It is a call for us to recognize and leverage our strengths and at the same time reminding us that self-improvement begins with self-awareness (“cherish that which gives you benefit“). We are cautioned against the “if’s” that lead us to dwell on the past and what could have been. By focusing on making the best of our current circumstances, we can move forward with a positive and proactive mindset.

Practice Humility and Seek Growth

And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful”.

Luqman 31:18

We are taught here the importance of humility and modesty in our interactions with others, reminding us not to arrogantly dismiss or belittle anyone. It encourages us to approach others with respect, recognizing that every person has value and wisdom to offer.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “It does not befit a Siddiq (righteous Muslim) to frequently curse others.” [Muslim]

Riyad as-Salihin 1552

This hadith underscores the importance of guarding our speech and refraining from harmful words – even when faced with criticism ourselves. Developing resilient minds that are open to growth and constructive criticism is vital. So heed advice, welcome suggestions, be strong and humbled when criticized.

Fulfilling Our Responsibilities

Our journey of self-improvement isn’t just about personal development but also about fulfilling our responsibilities to Allah and serving others. By embracing this duty, embodying the values of compassion, generosity, and humility, and harnessing our inner strength, we can overcome any obstacle. We can fulfil our true potential as individuals and as members of society, all while remaining steadfast in our devotion to Allah. As Allah says, “So race to [all that is] good” (Al-Baqarah 2:148). Let us seize this opportunity to empower ourselves and inspire others to do the same.
