Global Political Thought : Democracy, Marxism, Islam, Confucianism, Gandhi

Monday afternoons 2 -4pm for five weeks 22nd February to 22nd March 2021

This course examines and discusses the major traditions of political thought through the world as they are today. These include Western liberalism and democracy, Marxism, Islam, Confucianism and Gandhi. We will consider what is involved in these ideologies, how they evolved, how they relate to each other, and what the implications of these different belief systems are for international relations.

Tutor : Antony Black

Anthony Black is Emeritus Professor of the History of Political Thought at the University of Dundee.

His published works include a world history of ancient political thought, from prehistory to c.300 CE, a complete history of Islamic political thought, a comparative study of political thought in the West and in the Muslim-ruled world from the origins to the present, a history and theory of community and a recent exploration of climate change in the context of world history and the challenge it presents today.

He is currently working on a global history of political thought up to the present.
