Choosing the right husband is not just about finding a companion; it’s about selecting someone who can lead you and your family on the path of righteousness. In Islam, the husband holds a significant role as the leader of the household. He is responsible for guiding his family, standing firm against fitna (temptation and corruption), and ensuring that his home is a place where Islamic values are upheld. As husband and wife, you should complement each other according to the distinct roles set by Islam, working together to build a pious and strong family that pleases Allah.
It’s crucial to understand the weight of the decision when choosing a husband. In today’s modern world, you might feel pressured to lower your standards, thinking that it’s acceptable to overlook certain flaws because “times have changed.” However, this world is fleeting, and our true goal is to protect our akhira (hereafter). As a wife, your path to Jannah (Heaven) is closely linked to your husband, so do not settle for less. Do not allow yourself or others around you to bring someone into your life who doesn’t prioritise your spiritual well-being.
Additionally, do not rush into marrying someone who does not meet the standards of a righteous, God-fearing man simply because you think such men are rare or no longer exist. It is better to be patient and wait for the right person than to compromise. Patience will lead to success, and insha’Allah, you will find a husband who truly complements your faith and guides you towards Jannah.
His Commitment to the Deen (Religion)
Your future husband’s commitment to Islam should be the most important factor in your decision. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasised the importance of choosing a husband whose religion and character you are pleased with. Look for a man who sincerely follows the teachings of Islam in his daily life. Your wali (guardian) should investigate his commitment to salat (prayer) and other aspects of the deen. A person who neglects the rights of Allah is likely to neglect the rights of others, and it is rare to find someone with good character who isn’t a sincere Muslim.
His Attitude and Behaviour
Your wali should also assess the man’s character and behaviour. This includes understanding who his friends are and the company he keeps. Your wali should ask trustworthy individuals within the man’s circle about his sincerity, trustworthiness, and how he treats others. It is important to marry someone who understands and respects the gravity of sins like zina (adultery).
Zina is a major sin that brings corruption and weakens faith, so choose someone who fears Allah and understands the seriousness of this sin.
Fertility
When choosing a husband, consider his ability to have children. It is important that he discloses if he is sterile or infertile. If you marry him without knowing and later discover he cannot have children, you have the right to annul the marriage. However, if his condition is treatable and he is taking steps towards recovery, you may choose to stay with him if that is your wish.
Lineage and Socio-Economic Status
While not the most crucial factor, it is a bonus if your husband comes from a good family and has a respectable lineage. If two men are equal in their commitment to Islam, it is preferable to choose the one from a family known for their righteousness. The goodness of his family might be reflected in his own behaviour and, in turn, could be passed down to your children. This was illustrated in Surah Al-Kahf (18:82), where Allah protected the wealth of orphaned children because their father was righteous.
Wealth
While wealth should not be the primary factor, it is important to recognise that it should not dictate your decision to marry someone or limit how many children you wish to have. Allah is the ultimate provider, and all sustenance comes from Him. The Quran condemns those who fear poverty to the extent of committing wrongful acts, such as killing their children, which was common in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance. Trust in Allah’s provision and choose a man based on his faith and character rather than his financial status.
Health Considerations
Before marriage, it is important to consider health factors. A pre-marital medical examination can be essential in assessing genetic compatibility and screening for any serious health conditions. Conditions like thalassemia, sickle cell anaemia, or other genetic disorders should be checked. This ensures that both of you are fully informed and can make decisions that protect your future children’s health. Discussing health, lifestyle, and values with your prospective husband is crucial for building a strong and supportive marriage.
Choosing the right husband is one of the most significant decisions you will make in your life. Do not rush into marriage out of fear or pressure. Instead, be patient and wait for the right person who truly complements your faith and values. Do not compromise on the qualities that matter, and remember that the man you choose will be your leader in this life and the next. This world is temporary, so protect your akhira by choosing a husband who will lead you towards Jannah. Trust in Allah’s plan, be patient, and seek a righteous companion who will stand by you in this life and the hereafter.
