Have you ever watched someone cry while reciting the Quran and wondered, Why don’t I feel like that? A brother recently shared how he saw an Imam break down in tears during Salah, reciting the story of Prophet Ibrahim (ﷺ) and his son in Surah Saad. Despite reading the same story for over 20 years, the brother admitted he’d never felt such depth of emotion.
It’s a feeling many of us can relate to. We listen to the Quran, read it regularly, but sometimes, we struggle to feel its full impact. So, how do we soften our hearts and build a deeper connection with Allah’s words?
The Ups and Downs of Faith
Our hearts, just like our lives, go through highs and lows. Faith (Iman) is no different—it fluctuates. Some days, our prayers feel powerful, and we’re completely in tune with Allah’s words. Other days, it feels harder to connect.
This is perfectly natural. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us that Iman increases with good deeds and decreases with sins. This explains why you might read the same verse for years without feeling much, and then, one day, it hits you deeply.
Even great companions of the Prophet experienced this. Take Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Prophet passed away, Umar couldn’t accept it. He stood up and declared he’d fight anyone who said the Prophet had died. Then Abu Bakr recited the verse:
Muḥammad is no more than a messenger; other messengers have gone before him. If he were to die or to be killed, would you regress into disbelief? Those who do so will not harm Allah whatsoever. And Allah will reward those who are grateful.
Ali ‘Imran 3:144
At that moment, Umar felt as though he was hearing the verse for the very first time, even though he already knew it by heart.
This is a powerful reminder that Allah allows the Quran to touch our hearts at the right time.
How Can We Deepen Our Connection?
While we can’t expect to stay at the peak of faith all the time, we can strive to increase our closeness to the Quran. Here are a few steps that might help:
- Read with Reflection
Don’t just read to finish a chapter or reach a target. Take your time. Reflect on the meanings of the verses. Think about how they apply to your life. - Learn from the Sunnah
The life of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is a living example of the Quran. By learning about his actions and teachings, we can better understand how to live by Allah’s words. - Act on What You Learn
Knowledge without action won’t bring transformation. Try to implement what you’ve read, even if it’s just a small step at a time. - Share What You Discover
Talking to others about the Quran can deepen your understanding. Whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a study circle, sharing helps strengthen your connection. - Ask Allah for Help
Never underestimate the power of dua. Ask Allah to soften your heart, increase your faith, and grant you a deeper understanding of His words. - A Journey, Not a Destination
Remember, building a connection with the Quran is a journey. There will be times when your heart feels full of faith, and other times when it feels distant. What matters is that you keep striving.
So, don’t be disheartened. With every recitation, reflection, and action, you’re taking steps closer to Allah. And when the Quran finally touches your heart in a way you’ve never felt before, you’ll realise the effort was worth it.
May Allah grant us hearts that are soft, open, and deeply connected to His words. Ameen.
