When you look at the trees and mountains, what do you see? Perhaps they’re familiar sights, part of the scenery we pass by each day. But pause a moment, and truly see them. Feel the weight of their presence. Reflect on their grandeur. Each mountain, every tree, even the delicate bee and humble ant—all of these are signs of Allah’s majesty and might.
These creations aren’t simply silent figures in the backdrop of our lives. The Quran tells us that every part of nature remembers Allah, each in its own way, glorifying Him constantly in languages we cannot grasp but that the heart can sense.
تُسَبِّحُ لَهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ ٱلسَّبْعُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ ۚ وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا يُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِهِۦ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تَفْقَهُونَ تَسْبِيحَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ حَلِيمًا غَفُورًۭا ٤٤
The seven heavens, the earth, and all those in them glorify Him. There is not a single thing that does not glorify His praises—but you ˹simply˺ cannot comprehend their glorification. He is indeed Most Forbearing, All-Forgiving.
Al-Isra 17:44
Consider the mountains—tall, unmoving, steadfast. Yet the day will come when these very mountains will crumble and scatter as dust at the command of their Creator. Imagine their strength, the force required to shape them. They are mighty, yes, but obedient to their Lord. There’s a hadith that tells us the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) once pointed to Mount Uhud, saying it was a mountain that loves us and we love it. These creations are not just symbols of power; they are companions in our journey on earth, witnessing us, remembering us, and even on the Day of Judgment, they will testify to what they witnessed.
The Humble Creatures of Allah
And what of the bees and the ants, the tiny workers so often overlooked? Allah has given them an honoured place. There is even a chapter in the Quran named after the bee, celebrating its miraculous guidance and contributions. The bee, following Allah’s guidance, gives us honey—a remedy and a blessing. And the ant, small yet wise, was so respected that it warned its companions of the approaching army of Prophet Suleiman (رضي الله عنه).
وَأَوْحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلنَّحْلِ أَنِ ٱتَّخِذِى مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًۭا وَمِنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ ٦٨ ثُمَّ كُلِى مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ فَٱسْلُكِى سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًۭا ۚ يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌۭ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَٰنُهُۥ فِيهِ شِفَآءٌۭ لِّلنَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ٦٩
And your Lord inspired the bees: “Make ˹your˺ homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct, and feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.” From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colours, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.
An-Nahl 16:68-69
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ وَادِ ٱلنَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌۭ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّمْلُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ مَسَـٰكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَـٰنُ وَجُنُودُهُۥ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ١٨
And when they came across a valley of ants, an ant warned, “O ants! Go quickly into your homes so Solomon and his armies do not crush you, unknowingly.”
An-Naml 27:18
What does this tell us? These creatures have an understanding and a purpose beyond what we might assume. They live under Allah’s command, fulfilling their duties with precision and dedication. They remind us of humility, strength in unity, and the beauty of purpose. On the Day of Judgment, even the smallest beings may bear witness to the greatness of Allah and speak of what they saw on earth.
Signs in the Sky and the Rainfall
Look up to the sky, at the clouds that drift and gather, sometimes heavy with rain, sometimes light and gentle. The rainfall, the thunder, and the lightning—all carry meaning. We may enjoy the refreshing splash of raindrops, or even be startled by a loud clap of thunder, but there’s so much more to it. Rain brings life to barren lands, reminding us of resurrection, while thunder echoes with Allah’s praise.
وَيُسَبِّحُ ٱلرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِۦ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِۦ وَيُرْسِلُ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقَ فَيُصِيبُ بِهَا مَن يَشَآءُ وَهُمْ يُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ شَدِيدُ ٱلْمِحَالِ ١٣
The thunder glorifies His praises, as do the angels in awe of Him. He sends thunderbolts, striking with them whoever He wills. Yet they dispute about Allah. And He is tremendous in might.
Ar-Ra’d 13:13
This is the might of Allah. Each element is part of a symphony of remembrance, testifying to His power, submitting to His will. The world around us, vast and intricate, is woven with signs. How often do we marvel at these wonders? Do we allow ourselves the time to truly witness them, to remember that they are more than mere objects—they are our companions on this earthly journey, reflections of Allah’s power and artistry?
Which of Your Lord’s Favors Will You Deny?
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ١٣
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you ˹humans and jinn˺ both deny?
Ar-Rahman 55:13
It’s a question that echoes through time, a reminder and a gentle nudge for our hearts. The trees, the rivers, the mountains, the rain—they are all reminders of Allah’s mercy and His might. They offer blessings, wisdom, and lessons, should we choose to reflect upon them.
Every time we step out into the world, let’s see the majesty that surrounds us with fresh eyes. Let’s feel the awe of nature’s power and its obedience to Allah. From the towering mountain to the busy bee, every part of creation carries a message—a reminder that everything is in its rightful place, and that Allah is ever-present.
So the next time you’re walking through the woods, standing before a mountain, or simply watching the rain fall, remember that these are signs for us to ponder. Let’s honour them, revere them, and be grateful. For indeed, they are reminders of the One who created them, and in their quiet, constant worship, they point us toward Him.
