Practical Tips for Muslim Women: Embracing Cleanliness in Islam

In Islam, cleanliness holds a place of great importance in daily life. It is not just about physical hygiene but also encompasses mental and spiritual well-being. Our previous article, Maintaining Cleanliness: A Guide for Muslim Women, highlighted essential aspects of keeping oneself and one’s surroundings pure. In this follow-up, we aim to provide you with practical tips and straightforward advice to incorporate cleanliness into your daily routine effortlessly.

They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about menstruation. Say, “Beware of its harm! So keep away, and do not have intercourse with your wives during their monthly cycles until they are purified. When they purify themselves, then you may approach them in the manner specified by Allah. Surely Allah loves those who always turn to Him in repentance and those who purify themselves.”

Al-Baqarah 2:222

Maintaining Cleanliness

Maintaining cleanliness is a fundamental aspect of a Muslim woman’s daily life, deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam. It’s not just about physical cleanliness but also about spiritual purity. You might often find yourself navigating various responsibilities, from caring for your family to fulfilling your personal and professional obligations. Amidst all this, embracing the principles of cleanliness can bring a sense of tranquillity and fulfilment.

Keeping yourself and your surroundings clean isn’t solely a matter of hygiene; it is an act of worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of cleanliness, stating:

Abu Malik at-Ash’ari reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Cleanliness is half of faith

This profound statement serves as a reminder of the spiritual significance tied to cleanliness. Incorporating simple, practical habits into your routine can make a significant difference. Here are a few tips to help you maintain cleanliness effectively:

  • Regular Wudu: Perform ablution regularly, not just before prayers. It helps you stay fresh and mindful of your spiritual state.
  • Structured Routine: Establish a cleaning schedule for your home. Dedicate specific times of the day to tidy up and organize different areas.
  • Personal Hygiene: Ensure personal hygiene by regularly bathing, trimming your nails, removing hair from the armpits and pubic area, and wearing clean clothes.
  • Mindful Eating: Maintain cleanliness in your diet by choosing wholesome, clean foods and keeping your eating area tidy.

Practical Tips:

Creating a Cleaning Routine

Break down your cleaning tasks into daily, weekly, and monthly chores. This approach can help you manage and maintain a clean environment without becoming overwhelmed. Starting with daily chores, you might focus on quick tasks that ensure immediate cleanliness, such as wiping down kitchen counters, sweeping the floors, and doing a quick tidy-up of living areas. These small steps, taken regularly, prevent the buildup of dirt and clutter, making your home inviting and comfortable.

Weekly chores can encompass more thorough cleanings that cover areas often used but not necessarily cleaned every day. Consider devoting time to tasks like vacuuming carpets, mopping floors, changing bed linens, and scrubbing bathrooms. Weekly chores offer a deeper level of cleanliness, ensuring your home remains sanitary and pleasant, especially in high-traffic zones.

Monthly chores involve those tasks that are less frequent but just as essential to maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Think about deep-cleaning appliances, washing windows, dusting light fixtures, and cleaning out the refrigerator. These tasks, while time-consuming, address areas that are prone to accumulation of grime and can impact the overall ambiance of your home.

By segmenting your cleaning efforts into manageable chunks, you create a sustainable routine that keeps your home fresh and welcoming. This method not only helps you stay organized but also ensures that every part of your living space receives the attention it needs.

Personal Care Essentials

Consider keeping a personal hygiene kit handy with all necessary items like nail clippers, body wash, and razors. This makes routine hygiene practices more convenient and consistent. Additionally, you might include items such as a small mirror, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and any personal care products that suit your needs. Having these items readily available ensures you can perform your hygiene rituals efficiently, whether at home or on the go.

Tip: Organize your kit in a way that suits your daily routine. For instance, keep frequently used items easily accessible and ensure everything has its designated place to avoid clutter.

Eating Spaces

After meals, take a moment to clean up eating areas immediately, including wiping down tables and properly storing leftovers. This prevents the buildup of germs and keeps your surroundings tidy. To ensure thorough cleaning, consider using a disinfectant spray or wipes to clean surfaces used for eating. This step helps to eliminate any lingering bacteria and provides a cleaner environment for your next meal.

Additionally, make sure to wash any dishes, utensils, and cookware right away. Leaving dirty dishes in the sink can attract pests and create unpleasant odors. If you have a dishwasher, take advantage of it by loading it promptly and running it as needed. For hand-washed items, allow them to air-dry or use a clean dish towel to dry them before putting them away. Keeping your kitchen clean not only contributes to a hygienic home but also makes meal preparation more enjoyable.

Don’t forget to clean up crumbs and spills on the floor as well. Regularly sweep or vacuum the area to maintain a clean and pleasant eating space. By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you create a healthier and more inviting environment for yourself and your family.

Using Water Judiciously

When performing wudu or ghusl, be mindful of water usage. Use only as much as needed to ensure cleanliness while avoiding wastage. Remember, moderation is key—even in purification practices.

‘Abdallah b. ‘Amr b. al-‘As said that the Prophet came upon Sa’d when he was performing ablution and asked, “What is the meaning of this extravagance, Sa’d?” He replied, “Is there extravagance in ablution?” He said, “Yes, even if you are beside a flowing river.’’
Ahmad and Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Additionally, ensure the water used is clean and free of any impurities. Avoid water that is foul-smelling, has altered characteristics, or is mixed with impurities. Choosing the right type of water not only fulfills religious obligations but also ensures your personal hygiene and well-being.

While focusing on cleanliness, it is also important to follow the prescribed steps for wudu and ghusl thoroughly. This includes cleansing the outer surface of any substances covering the skin, running damp fingers through the hair, wiping the head from front to back, cleaning both ears inside and out, and washing the feet three times. These steps, when performed mindfully, become a form of spiritual devotion, connecting you deeper with your faith.

Finally, approach your purification practices with a calm and reflective mindset. Treat these moments as opportunities to reconnect with your spirituality and seek closeness to Allah through your commitment to cleanliness and ritual purity. Every drop of water used in these acts is a step towards both physical and spiritual purification.

Purification from External Sources

Ensure your prayer garments are free from obvious impurities by washing them regularly. Pay attention to any stains or marks that could signify impurity, and treat them promptly. Using gentle detergents can help maintain the fabric’s quality, making your garments both clean and comfortable.

Similarly, maintain a clean prayer area by disinfecting and dusting it frequently to create a pure space for worship. Consider using a separate prayer mat that is kept clean and rolled up when not in use to avoid contamination. Regularly clean the mat by either washing it or wiping it down with a safe disinfectant. This practice enhances your concentration and connection to your prayers, fostering a serene and purified environment.

Environmental Cleanliness

Extend the principle of cleanliness to your immediate environment. Dispose of trash properly, recycle whenever possible, and encourage others to maintain clean surroundings. Maintaining a clean environment not only reflects your faith but also enhances the quality of life for everyone around you.

Proper Waste Disposal: Make it a habit to dispose of your trash correctly. Use designated bins for different types of waste, such as recyclables and compostables. This simple act helps keep your surroundings clean and minimizes harm to the environment.

Recycling: Recycling is a practical way to contribute to environmental cleanliness. Separate your waste materials according to local recycling guidelines. Teach your family members, especially children, the importance of recycling and how to do it correctly. This not only ensures a cleaner home but also fosters a sense of responsibility towards the planet.

Encouraging Others: Lead by example and gently encourage those around you to adopt clean habits. Share the benefits of a clean environment with friends and neighbors, and motivate them to join you in keeping your community clean. Simple actions, like organizing community clean-up events or sharing tips, can make a significant difference.

Remember, in Islam, cleanliness extends beyond personal hygiene. It encompasses the spaces you inhabit and reflects your respect and gratitude for the blessings provided by Allah. By taking these steps, you embody the values of purity and contribute positively to your environment and community.

Spiritual Connection Through Cleanliness

Remember that cleanliness brings you closer to Allah. It is not just a physical act but also a spiritual practice that enhances your faith and well-being. Embracing cleanliness allows you to maintain purity in your daily life, facilitating a deeper connection with your spiritual self.

This practice is beautifully woven into the fabric of Islamic teachings, emphasizing its importance not only for your personal health but also for your spiritual development. When you make cleanliness a priority, you are fulfilling a significant aspect of your faith, which ultimately brings you peace and harmony.

Furthermore, this conscious commitment to cleanliness positively impacts your surroundings, promoting an environment that reflects the values of Islam such as respect, care, and devotion. Each act of cleanliness, no matter how small, embodies a form of worship and a reminder of your dedication to living a life that is in harmony with the teachings of Allah.

Conclusion:

Embracing cleanliness in your daily life not only fosters a healthier and more serene environment but also reinforces your spiritual journey. It is a tangible expression of your faith and dedication to the teachings of Islam. By integrating these practical tips into your routines, you’re honoring a tradition that intertwines physical purity with spiritual growth, ensuring your life remains balanced and harmonious in the eyes of Allah. Your efforts, no matter how small, are cherished acts of devotion.
