There are moments in life when we feel as though we are walking alone.

Yes, we may have parents who give/gave us unconditional love. Yes, we may have (had) a marriage filled with mawaddah wa rahmah, or perhaps we are still waiting for that tranquility to blossom. Yes, we may hold our children close as if they are the very breath in our lungs.

And yet something inside us still longs for more. We long for a love beyond human limitation. A love that does not misunderstand our silence. A love that does not tire of explaining who we are. A love that does not fluctuate with moods, expectations, or human shortcomings.

We long for the Love of Allah.

And sometimes, especially when anxiety tightens around the heart, we wonder: Is He near? Does He see what I am carrying? Does He love me and accept me, even when I feel misunderstood or that I can do better?

Before Your Lips Even Move

Allah answers that longing here:

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لِى وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِى لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ ١٨٦

When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺.

Al-Baqarah 2:186

What is remarkable about this verse is not only what it says, but how it says it. In nearly every other place where people ask the Prophet ﷺ a question, Allah responds with the instruction: “Say…” (قُلْ). But here, there is no “Say.” There is no intermediary.

Allah answers directly: “Indeed, I am near.”

Before your lips even move, He is already listening. Before your du‘a forms into words, He already knows what your heart is trying to say.

He is As-Sami’, The All-Hearing.

Not hearing like we hear, distracted, strained, limited. He hears every voice at once without confusion. Every whisper. Every sigh. Even what has not yet become sound.

وَإِن تَجْهَرْ بِٱلْقَوْلِ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلسِّرَّ وَأَخْفَى ٧

Whether you speak openly ˹or not˺, He certainly knows what is secret and what is even more hidden.

Taha 20:7

He hears what is more silent than silence itself.

And when the Prophet ﷺ once heard a man raising his voice in du‘a, he gently reminded him:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، وَأَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي سَفَرٍ فَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَجْهَرُونَ بِالتَّكْبِيرِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ارْبَعُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ لَيْسَ تَدْعُونَ أَصَمَّ وَلاَ غَائِبًا إِنَّكُمْ تَدْعُونَ سَمِيعًا قَرِيبًا وَهُوَ مَعَكُمْ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَأَنَا خَلْفَهُ وَأَنَا أَقُولُ لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ قَيْسٍ أَلاَ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى كَنْزٍ مِنْ كُنُوزِ الْجَنَّةِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ قُلْ لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Abu Musa reported: We were along with Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) on a journey when the people began to pronounce “Allahu Akbar” in a loud voice. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: O people, show mercy to yourselves for you are not calling One who is deaf or absent. Verily, you are calling One who is All-Hearing (and) Near to you and is with you. Abu Musa said that he had been behind him (the Prophet) and reciting: “There is neither might nor power but that of Allah.” He (the Prophet), while addressing ‘Abdullah b. Qais, said: Should I not direct you to a treasure from amongst the treasures of Paradise? I (‘Abdullah b. Qais) said: Allah’s Messenger, do it, of course. Thereupon he (the Prophet) said: Then recite: “There is no might and no power but that of Allah.”

When I Was Searching for a Sign

Personal Story: There was a time when I found myself searching for reassurance, for a sign that Allah loved me, that He saw me, that my effort was not unnoticed.

One day, I opened the Qur’an seeking comfort, and my eyes fell upon:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ ١٥٣

O believers! Seek comfort in patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient.

Al-Baqarah 2:153

At first, I wanted something more dramatic, something that directly said, “You are loved.” But instead, Allah directed me back to patience and prayer.

And then weeks later, I came across this video:

It slowly dawned on me that perhaps that was the sign I needed.

Not an external miracle. Not an immediate removal of anxiety. But guidance back to salah. Back to patience (forebearance). Back to Him.

Perhaps the fact that we are searching for Him at all is itself evidence that He is drawing us nearer.

Al-Wadud: Love That Moves Toward You

Allah describes Himself as Al-Wadud, The Most Loving.

But the name Al-Wadud does not mean passive affection. It is love expressed. Love that acts. Love that manifests in care, protection, and guidance.

Human love can feel conditional. It can fluctuate. We may feel misunderstood, unappreciated, or taken for granted. These feelings can open the door to waswas, to anxious thoughts that tell us we are unseen or unloved.

But Allah’s love is not like that.

When Allah loves a servant, that love has consequences. The Prophet ﷺ taught:

وعنه عن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال‏: ‏ ‏”‏إذا أحب الله العبد نادى جبريل‏: ‏ إن الله تعالى يحب فلانًا، فأحببه، فيحبه جبريل، فينادي في أهل السماء‏: ‏ إن الله يحب فلانًا، فأحبوه، فيحبه أهل السماء، ثم يوضع له القبول في الأرض‏”‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏ ‏.‏
وفي رواية لمسلم ‏: ‏ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم‏: ‏ ‏”‏إن الله تعالى إذا أحب عبدًا دعا جبريل، فقال ‏: ‏ إني أحب فلانًا فأحببه، فيحبه جبريل، ثم ينادي في السماء، فيقول‏: ‏ إن الله يحب فلانًا، فأحبوه فيحبه أهل السماء، ثم يوضع له القبول في الأرض، وإذا أبغض عبدًا دعا جبريل فيقول‏: ‏ إني أبغض فلانًا، فأبغضه، فيبغضه جبريل، ثم ينادي في أهل السماء، إن الله يبغض فلانًا، فأبغضوه، ثم توضع له البغضاء في الأرض‏”‏‏.‏

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When Allah loves a slave, calls out Jibril and says: ‘I love so-and-so; so love him’. Then Jibril loves him. After that he (Jibril) announces to the inhabitants of heavens that Allah loves so- and-so; so love him; and the inhabitants of the heavens (the angels) also love him and then make people on earth love him”. [Al- Bukhari and Muslim].

Allah’s love is active. It draws you closer. It protects you from what would break you. It redirects you when you drift. It brings reminders to you at the exact moment your heart needs them.

Sometimes His love is not in giving you what you asked for, but in preventing what would have harmed you.

Sometimes it is in softening your heart before it hardens under anxiety.

Closeness Before Response

In Surah Al-Baqarah 2:186, notice the order: Allah mentions His nearness before He mentions answering.

First: “Indeed, I am near.”
Then: “I respond to the call…”

He is Al-Qarib (The Near) before He is Al-Mujib (The Responsive).

Sometimes the first answer to your du‘a is not the removal of hardship. It is the reassurance of presence.

And sometimes He changes you before He changes your circumstances.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩ ١٩

…Rather, ˹continue to˺ prostrate and draw near ˹to Allah˺.

Al-‘Alaq 96:19

The nearness you feel in sujood, that quiet stillness when your forehead rests on the ground, may itself be the love you were searching for.

A Dua for His Love

The Prophet ﷺ taught a beautiful du‘a asking Allah not only for love, but for the ability to love what He loves:

وعن أبي الدرداء، رضي الله عنه، قال‏: ‏ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم‏: ‏ ‏”‏كان من دعاء داود عليه السلام‏: ‏ ‏”‏اللهم إني أسألك حبك، وحب من يحبك، والعمل الذي يبلغني حبك، اللهم اجعل حبك أحب إلى من نفسي، وأهلي، ومن الماء البارد‏”‏‏.‏ رواه الترمذي وقال حديث حسن‏.‏

Abud-Darda’ (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “One of Prophet Dawud’s supplications was: ‘Allahumma inni as’aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wal-‘amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbaka. Allahumm-aj’al hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi, wa ahli, wa minal-ma’il-baridi (O Allah! I ask You for Your Love, the love of those who love You, and deeds which will cause me to attain Your Love. O Allah! Make Your Love dearer to me than myself, my family and the cold water).”‘ [At- Tirmidhi].

If Allah guides you to what He loves, and enables you to love what He loves, that itself is a sign that He loves you.

Perhaps This Was the Sign

You may be searching for reassurance. You may be carrying anxieties about being misunderstood, unseen, or unappreciated. You may be wondering if your acts of worship, such as dhikr, salah, fasting, and Quran recitations, are enough.

But the One you are turning toward is not distant.

Ya Sami’, He hears you.
Ya Qarib, He is nearer than your own breath.
Ya Wadud, His love moves toward you before you move toward Him.
Ya Mujib, He answers in ways you may only understand later.

Perhaps the sign you were searching for was never meant to be dramatic. Perhaps the sign was that your heart refused to be satisfied with anything less than Him.
