Sha’ban is a month many of us pass through without pause, yet it holds immense spiritual weight. It sits quietly between Rajab and Ramadan – it isn’t a sacred month nor is it a month of obligation – and perhaps for that reason, it is often neglected.
While we carry on as normal, looking ahead to Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave Sha’ban visible attention – because of what takes place within it.
Usamah bin Zaid said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as Shaban.’ He said: ‘That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.“‘
Sunan an-Nasa’i 2357
This hadith alone establishes the core virtue of Sha’ban: it is a month in which deeds are presented to Allah.
Does Sha’ban Place Extra Emphasis on Deeds?
Every deed we perform is written and recorded. Nothing is missed, overlooked, or forgotten by Allah. Yet within this constant recording, we are directed to specific moments – times when awareness, sincerity, and presence are meant to deepen.
The Prophet ﷺ informed us that deeds are presented to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays, and he increased fasting on those days. He also gave particular attention to Sha’ban, describing it as the month in which deeds are raised – not because deeds are absent outside of it, but because attention is being drawn to a wider period of accountability.
In the same way, we are taught that the last third of the night is a particularly blessed time for duʿāʾ and prayer.
What distinguishes Sha’ban, then, is not exclusivity, but emphasis. It is a seasonal moment, positioned at a turning point between Rajab and Ramadan, calling believers to pause, reflect, and realign.
Fasting the 13th, 14th, and 15th of every lunar month is a well-established Sunnah, not limited to Sha’ban. When these days fall within Sha’ban, when a Monday or Thursday arrives in this month, or when the final part of the night is reached, they occur within a time already marked by increased fasting and attentiveness.
No new rituals are required. No special practices need to be invented. These acts already exist within the Sunnah. But when Sha’ban itself has been highlighted, it should not be treated as a month to pass through unnoticed.
Where the 15th of Sha’ban Fits
Only after understanding the month as a whole does the 15th of Sha’ban come into view.
It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “I missed the Prophet (ﷺ) one night, so I went out looking for him. I found him at Al-Baqi’, raising his head towards the sky. He said: ‘O ‘Aishah, were you afraid that Allah and His Messenger would wrong you?’” She said: “I said: ‘No, it is not that, but I thought that you had gone to one of your other wives.’ He said: ‘Allah descends on the night of the middle of Sha’ban to the lowest heaven, and He forgives more than the numbers of hairs on the sheep of Banu Kalb.’” (Graded Da’if: Weak)
Sunan Ibn Majah 1389
There are narrations – some weak individually, but numerous – that speak about the 15th of Sha’ban. Scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله acknowledged that the number of narrations suggests some virtue.
Final Thoughts
Sha’ban teaches us restraint before Ramadan teaches intensity.
It teaches sincerity before visibility.
Heartwork before hunger.
And if the heart is not prepared, no amount of fasting will lift what resentment weighs down.
