The Different Levels of Modesty for Muslim Women: A Perspective from a Muslim Woman

Modesty is a significant aspect of Islamic teachings, especially when it comes to the attire and behavior of Muslim women. The Quran and hadiths provide guidelines on the levels of modesty expected from women, taking into account different situations and interactions within society.

The Quran emphasizes the concept of modesty and decency for both men and women. In Surah An-Nur, verse 31, Allah says, “And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”

This verse outlines the guidelines for the attire and behavior of Muslim women, highlighting the importance of covering their adornments and maintaining modesty in their interactions with non-mahram (non-related) individuals. It also provides a list of individuals before whom a woman is allowed to relax the rules of hijab, emphasizing the importance of maintaining modesty in interactions with those who are not closely related.

Furthermore, the hadiths offer additional insight into the levels of modesty for Muslim women. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “A woman is awrah (private part). When she goes outside, the devil welcomes her” (Tirmidhi). This hadith underscores the concept of guarding one’s modesty by ensuring that inappropriate elements do not infiltrate a woman’s public interactions and demeanor.

From a woman’s perspective, these teachings emphasize the need to observe modesty in all aspects of life, including attire, behavior, and interactions. The levels of modesty may vary in different cultural and societal contexts, but the underlying principles remain consistent.

In conclusion, the Quran and hadiths provide detailed guidance on the levels of modesty expected from Muslim women. These teachings underscore the significance of maintaining modesty and decency in all aspects of life, ultimately aiming to promote dignity, respect, and purity within society. As a Muslim woman, it is crucial to embody these principles and strive to learn that modesty does take time, but once you finally start covering up a bit, life seems easier.
