The Wisdom Behind Hardships: Why We Face Challenges

Life is full of ups and downs, and no one is spared from facing difficulties. Whether it’s problems within the family, struggles with health or wealth, or battling desires and temptations, these challenges are part of the human experience. However, as Muslims, we know that nothing in life is random. Every trial has meaning and serves a purpose.

Here are four reasons why hardships come our way and how we can find strength in them.

1. Allah’s Plan for You

The first and most comforting reason for any hardship is that it is part of Allah’s divine plan for your life. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, knows what is best for each of us, even when we don’t understand it.

Fighting has been made obligatory upon you ˹believers˺, though you dislike it. Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you and like something which is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know.

Al-Baqarah 2:216

When faced with difficulty, remember that Allah is guiding you through a process that will ultimately benefit you, even if it feels overwhelming in the moment. Trust in His plan and stay patient.

Suhaib reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer for if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is a good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is a good for him in it.

Sahih Muslim 2999

2. A Test to Elevate Your Rank

Trials are a way for Allah to test our faith and strengthen our connection with Him. These tests purify us, erase our sins, and can elevate our rank in the Hereafter.

We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life, and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure—

Al-Baqarah 2:155

Through patience and steadfastness, we prove our devotion to Allah and grow spiritually. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.”

Sahih Bukhari 5641, Sahih Muslim 2573

So, when life feels heavy, take comfort in knowing that your endurance is drawing you closer to Allah and building your eternal reward.

3. A Blessing in Disguise

What may feel like suffering in the moment often turns out to be a hidden blessing. Hardships can teach us important lessons, strengthen our character, and lead us to something better in the long run.

Allah promises us in the Quran:

So, surely with hardship comes ease. Surely with ˹that˺ hardship comes ˹more˺ ease.

Surah Ash-Sharh, 94:5–6

Sometimes, our difficulties pave the way for ease, opening doors to opportunities we never imagined. A believer’s heart is always hopeful, knowing that Allah does not burden us beyond what we can bear (Al-Baqarah 2:286). Trust that your current struggles are shaping a better future for you.

4. Consequences of Our Choices

Sometimes, the challenges we face are the natural consequences of our own decisions. While these moments can be painful, they are also powerful opportunities for reflection and self-improvement.

Whatever affliction befalls you is because of what your own hands have committed. And He pardons much.

Ash-Shuraa 42:30

Rather than dwelling on regret, view these experiences as lessons from Allah to redirect you toward what is right. Mistakes humble us and help us appreciate the importance of seeking Allah’s guidance in all matters.

Anas (RAA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often.” Related by At·Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah with a strong chain of narrators.

Bulugh al-Maram

Acknowledging our mistakes and taking steps to correct them not only strengthens our character but also deepens our reliance on Allah. Each misstep can bring us closer to Him if we respond with humility and repentance.

Finding Strength Through Faith

Understanding the reasons behind life’s challenges can transform how we approach them. Each trial is an opportunity to:

  1. Strengthen your trust in Allah’s plan.
  2. Build patience and gain higher rewards in the Hereafter.
  3. Discover hidden blessings and lessons.
  4. Learn from mistakes and grow in wisdom.

When faced with hardships, remember this:

On the authority of Abu Abbas Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: One day I was behind the Prophet (ﷺ) [riding on the same mount] and he said, “O young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]: Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allah [alone]. And know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”
It was related by at-Tirmidhi, who said it was a good and sound hadeeth. Another narration, other than that of Tirmidhi, reads:
Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. Recognize and acknowledge Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will remember you in times of adversity. And know that what has passed you by [and you have failed to attain] was not going to befall you, and what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and hardship with ease.

Hadith 19, 40 Hadith an-Nawawi

So, hold onto hope, stay steadfast in prayer, and keep moving forward with faith. Whatever you’re facing now is shaping you into the person Allah knows you can become. Trust in Him, and He will see you through.

May Allah ease our hardships, guide us through life’s tests, and grant us success in both this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.
