وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ ۖ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِىٓ إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِىٓ أَخَوَٰتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُنَّ أَوِ ٱلتَّـٰبِعِينَ غَيْرِ أُو۟لِى ٱلْإِرْبَةِ مِنَ ٱلرِّجَالِ أَوِ ٱلطِّفْلِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰ عَوْرَٰتِ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۖ وَلَا يَضْرِبْنَ بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِينَ مِن زِينَتِهِنَّ ۚ وَتُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ٣١

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments[1] except what normally appears.[2] Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments[3] except to their husbands, their fathers, their fathers-in-law, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, their fellow women, those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession, male attendants with no desire, or children who are still unaware of women’s nakedness. Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments. Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O  believers, so that you may be successful.

An-Nur 24:31

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِيبِهِنَّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰٓ أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا ٥٩

O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.[1]

Al-Ahzab 33:59

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏ “‏ الْحَيَاءُ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ وَالإِيمَانُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَالْبَذَاءُ مِنَ الْجَفَاءِ وَالْجَفَاءُ فِي النَّارِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated from Abu Bakrah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Modesty is part of faith, and faith will be in Paradise. Obscenity in speech is part of harshness and harshness will be in Hell.’”

Sunan Ibn Majah 4184

• Stay Positive: Maintain an optimistic outlook, even in the face of difficulties. Your positive attitude can inspire others and create a supportive work environment.
• Trust in Allah: Remember, your fate is in Allah’s hands. As part of Tawheed, we fully entrust everything to Him. This means we don’t need to grovel or bow to higher management. Simply do your best with honesty and truthfulness, and leave the rest to Allah. He will take care of you and your future.

Build a Strong Personal Brand

Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the professional world. Rather than focusing heavily on social media, consider creating a personal website or blog to highlight your expertise and experiences. A well-crafted personal brand can enhance your visibility and attract potential employers or collaborators.

Develop Strong Communication Skills

Effective communication is vital in any professional environment. Work on honing both your verbal and non-verbal communication skills. This includes clear articulation, active listening, and maintaining a confident demeanour in professional settings. This might also involve perfecting your tone and inflection to ensure clarity. Always ensure your communication aligns with Islamic principles, such as lowering your gaze and being respectful. Being an excellent communicator helps you build professional relationships, ensuring your ideas are heard and respected.

• Use body language effectively. Maintain good posture and use hand gestures to emphasise points.
• Practice active listening. Nod to show you are engaged and interested but keep your gaze lowered.
• Be mindful of your tone. A positive and respectful tone can make a significant difference.
• Develop strong writing skills. Clear and concise emails and reports reflect your professionalism.
• Seek feedback. Regularly ask colleagues or mentors for input on how to improve your communication.

Network Strategically

Building a professional network is crucial. Consider virtual networking options as alternative to attending in person. They also provide industry conferences, workshops, and networking events to meet like-minded professionals while adhering to your values. Join professional organisations and online forums to connect with others in your field. Networking can open doors to new opportunities and provide a support system of mentors and peers, but always maintain appropriate boundaries and avoid unnecessary chit-chat or interactions that are not in line with Islamic guidelines. A mentor can provide guidance, share insights, and help you navigate your career path. Look for mentors within your organisation or through professional networks who understand the specific dynamics and challenges that come with being a professional Muslima.

• Don’t hesitate to seek mentorship from experienced professionals who can guide you through the complexities of career advancement.
• Seek out women mentors, preferably those who are also Muslim, as they can provide guidance tailored to your specific experiences.
• Build a strong support network of like-minded individuals (Muslim and non-Muslim women with shared values) who can offer advice and encouragement.
• Hone your communication skills to articulate your thoughts and needs effectively in various professional settings.

For this reason, it is important that we prioritise self-care to maintain our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
